sensible.vim: Defaults everyone can agree on
vim-sensible is Tim Pope's minimal set of :set defaults meant to be the baseline everyone installs before layering on their own vimrc. It's for Vim users who want backspace-in-insert-mode and incsearch without pulling in a full distro like spf13 or a personal 500-line config.
It's tiny and single-purpose — the whole plugin is a handful of :set calls in plugin/sensible.vim, so you can read the entire source in two minutes and know exactly what you're getting. It loads before your vimrc so overriding any setting is trivial (just set it again below). Zero dependencies, zero configuration surface, and it's been stable for over a decade so it won't break your setup with an update.
It's Vim-only — nothing here is relevant if you've moved to Neovim, which already ships most of these as built-in defaults since 0.9, making the plugin redundant for a growing share of users. Last push was mid-2024 with no real feature additions in years, which is fine for something this scoped but means don't expect it to track newer Vim options. It solves a problem (bad defaults) that's largely been fixed upstream, so its usefulness is shrinking over time rather than growing.
