🎃 A fast, out-of-the-box macOS terminal built for AI coding.

Kaku is a macOS-only terminal built on top of WezTerm, repackaging its Lua-configurable, GPU-rendered core with batteries-included defaults (fonts, themes, shell integration) and an optional bring-your-own-key AI assistant for command suggestions and chat. It's for Mac developers who want WezTerm's engine without spending a weekend tuning dotfiles, especially if they're already living in Claude Code, Codex, or similar CLI tools.

Shell integration ships with actual smoke tests (ssh snapshot wrapper, tmux integration, starship prompt, fish/zsh edge cases) under assets/shell-integration/tests/, which is more rigor than most terminal dotfile projects bother with. It keeps WezTerm's full Lua config system as an escape hatch, so the sensible defaults don't lock out power users. The AI assistant is BYOK rather than a bundled subscription service, and explicitly wires up config for Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, and Copilot CLI instead of inventing its own agent.

macOS only, confirmed in the FAQ, so it's a non-starter for Windows or Linux users. It vendors roughly 30 of WezTerm's internal crates directly into crates/ rather than depending on them, meaning it's a hard fork that will need manual rebasing to pick up upstream WezTerm fixes and security patches. The AI feature is a thin wrapper that shells out to whatever external service you configure for suggestions and chat, not a differentiated capability, so the real pitch is 'WezTerm with better defaults' more than 'AI terminal.' It's maintained by one person who is simultaneously running two sibling products (Waza, Kami) plus a paid app, worth checking issue turnaround before relying on it daily.
