Rspack is a Rust-based bundler that mirrors the webpack API to let teams swap in a much faster build tool with minimal migration pain. It's aimed at large JS/TS projects currently stuck on webpack who want faster cold starts and HMR without rewriting their config and plugin stack.

Huge, serious engineering effort backed by ByteDance with a massive crate-level architecture (modules for chunk graph, module federation, caching, incremental builds) rather than a toy reimplementation. Webpack plugin/loader compatibility is a real differentiator - most projects can migrate without ripping out their existing loader chain. Active benchmarking infrastructure (codspeed, ecosystem-benchmark, valgrind perf goals) shows they actually track regressions instead of just claiming speed. Part of a broader coordinated toolchain (Rsbuild, Rspress, Rstest) so it's not an isolated bet.

Webpack compatibility is advertised but inevitably partial - plugins relying on deep internal webpack APIs or less common hooks can break, and you won't know until you try your specific setup. Rust core means contributing meaningfully requires Rust skills, which shrinks the pool of people who can fix issues themselves versus a pure-JS tool. Being tied to webpack's API also inherits some of webpack's config complexity and conceptual baggage rather than simplifying it. Heavy corporate backing is good for momentum but also means roadmap priorities may skew toward ByteDance's internal needs over community requests.
