The Complete Intro to React, as given for Frontend Masters
This is the companion code for Brian Holt's 'Complete Intro to React' and 'Intermediate React' courses on Frontend Masters — a small pet-adoption app used to teach React fundamentals (components, hooks, context, code-splitting) from scratch. It's for beginners following the paid video course, not a standalone learning resource or library.
The app is deliberately small (a handful of components under src/) so you can read the whole thing in one sitting instead of hunting through a sprawling example. It ships real linting/formatting config (.eslintrc, .prettierrc, .editorconfig) which is more discipline than most tutorial repos bother with. It also shows a practical pattern for mocking a third-party API client (petfinder-client) after the real Petfinder v1 API was deprecated, which is a useful trick beyond the React content itself.
Without the paid video course, the repo on its own is just static end-state code with no lesson-by-lesson commits or branches to follow the progression — you lose most of the pedagogical value. It's built on Parcel 1.x, which is effectively abandoned in favor of Parcel 2/Vite, so the setup instructions and debugging notes (manually deleting dist/ and .cache/) are dated. There are no tests anywhere in the project, which is a missed opportunity for a teaching repo that could otherwise model that habit. Last push was March 2023 with no signs of ongoing maintenance, so expect stale dependencies if you actually try to run it today.
