The Complete Intro to React, the fifth version

This is the companion code repo for Brian Holt's 'Complete Intro to React v5' and 'Intermediate React v2' courses on Frontend Masters. It's a teaching artifact, not a library or app template — a Pet Adoption search app (SearchParams, Results, Details, Carousel, Modal) built up commit-by-commit as the course progresses. Aimed at developers learning React fundamentals from scratch, not experienced React devs looking for patterns.

Commit history doubles as a lesson index — each step in the course maps to a commit, so you can diff between them to see exactly what changed and why. Small, readable component set (ErrorBoundary, ThemeContext, custom hooks like useDropdown) that covers real React concepts without unnecessary abstraction. Apache 2.0 licensing on the code means you can freely lift snippets even without paying for the course.

The actual instructional content — the thing that makes this useful — lives behind a Frontend Masters paywall; the repo alone is just code with minimal comments. No commits since March 2023, so it reflects React and tooling choices from several major versions back, and the README's troubleshooting section for regeneratorRuntime and Parcel cache issues signals the build setup is already showing its age. Uses Parcel instead of Vite, which most current React tutorials have moved away from, so newcomers copying this setup will hit friction that has nothing to do with learning React. No tests despite being pitched as reference code for beginners.
