Intro to Web Dev, v2
This is the companion site and lesson markdown for Brian Holt's 'Complete Introduction to Web Development' course on Frontend Masters — a Gatsby static site that renders the lesson files. It's for absolute beginners going through HTML/CSS/JS basics, git, and Node fundamentals, not for developers looking for a standalone code library.
The lesson content itself is solid and pedagogically ordered — basic HTML through DOM manipulation, functions/scope, and even a git primer, written in plain prose rather than slide decks. The license is unusually generous for teaching material: free to fork, fix, and reuse in non-commercial classrooms. The static examples under /static (calculator, animation, a mock news page) are small, dependency-free HTML/CSS/JS files that are easy to read end to end without a build step.
The repo is really the packaging for a paid video course, so a chunk of the value (the actual teaching) lives behind a Frontend Masters subscription — the markdown alone is a skeleton without narration. It's been dormant since February 2023, and it's built on Gatsby, which has since stagnated as a choice for new static sites. There are no tests and no CI, which is fine for a course site but means silent breakage on dependency bumps. Content (lessons/) and site infrastructure (gatsby-*, src/) are mixed in one repo, so anyone wanting to reuse just the lesson text has to pick it out from the Gatsby scaffolding.
