🌱 1-on-1 questions and resources from my time as a manager.

// the take

A single README of 1-on-1 meeting questions and a few external links, organized by topic (work habits, team dynamics, goals, manager feedback). It's for engineering managers or new team leads who want a prompt list to run better monthly check-ins, not a tool or library.

The questions are specific and non-generic — things like 'what's your process for getting unstuck' or 'what's the percentage of my involvement in your tasks, more or less?' actually surface something, unlike most 1-on-1 templates that ask 'how's it going?'. The categorization (work habits, short vs long-term goals, manager growth) gives structure to an otherwise unstructured conversation, and the manager-growth section — asking directly what you could do better — is something most managers skip.

It's one markdown file with no code, no app, no way to track answers over time or follow up on what someone said last month — you're on your own for that. Last pushed May 2024 with no commits since, so don't expect updates or new material. The external links (getlighthouse, lattice, hbr.org) are just a reading list and could rot or get paywalled at any point since nothing here is archived.

We read the README, the directory tree and a key source file in October 2026. Nobody pays to be listed. How we judge →
