Put Overcast on your Mac's menu bar

// the take

A tiny macOS menu bar wrapper around Overcast's web player, giving you playback controls and media-key support without keeping a browser tab open. Aimed at Overcast users who want it to feel like a native background app rather than a webpage.

Decent native touches for what's essentially a webview wrapper: a Touch Bar mini player, a global media-key event tap (PMEventTap) so keyboard play/pause and skip work system-wide, and a status bar popover UI that behaves like a real menu bar app rather than a parked browser window.

Dead since February 2019 — seven years with no updates against a web app (overcast.fm) that has certainly changed its markup since. The whole thing works by scraping Overcast's web UI with injected JS (EpisodesParser.js, PodcastsParser.js, PlaybackInfoParser.js), so it's one Overcast frontend redesign away from breaking completely, and there's no way to know if it still functions. It bundles Fabric/Crashlytics as binary frameworks, a crash-reporting service Google shut down in 2020 — dead weight at best, and the app has no telemetry if it's actually crashing for anyone now. Releases are unsigned/unnotarized zip downloads, so on any current macOS this won't launch without manually bypassing Gatekeeper.
