:computer: :mortar_board: Git-it is a (Mac, Win, Linux) Desktop App for Learning Git and GitHub
Git-it is an Electron desktop app that teaches Git and GitHub fundamentals through a sequence of verifiable challenges run against your real terminal and a real GitHub account, rather than a simulated sandbox. It's aimed at complete beginners — bootcamp students or self-taught developers doing their first clone/branch/PR — not anyone with existing git experience.
Challenges verify against your actual filesystem and GitHub API state, so you finish with real repos and a real contribution graph instead of a fake progress bar. It ships with translations for eight languages baked into the app itself, not just the README. The challenge structure (one Electron 'lesson' per git concept, with a Verify step) is a clean pedagogical model that's easy to extend with new topics.
The repo vendors a full PortableGit distribution as raw binaries (.exe, .dll, .tcl files) directly in git history instead of downloading it at install time — clone size and repo bloat are much worse than they need to be. Onboarding instructions tell new users to install Atom, which GitHub discontinued in December 2022, so the first-run experience is already broken for newcomers. CI is Travis, which hasn't been a functioning free option for open source in years, so that badge is almost certainly dead. Despite a push as recent as April 2024, there's no sign of modernization (editor recommendation, Electron version, CI) — it reads as intermittently maintained rather than actively developed.
