Run any GUI app in the terminal❗

A from-scratch Wayland compositor written in Go that renders GUI application windows as ANSI/image output directly in a terminal, including over SSH. It's for people who want to run graphical apps (browsers, games, file managers) inside a terminal emulator, mostly as a technical curiosity/party trick rather than a daily-driver tool.

Implements the Wayland protocol itself rather than wrapping an existing compositor, which is a genuinely hard and well-documented engineering effort (see the generated protocol bindings and HowIDidIt.md write-up). Supports both X11 and Wayland hosts, degrades gracefully to ANSI art on plain terminals but switches to full-resolution image output on kitty/iTerm2. Actively maintained with a recent rewrite from TypeScript to Go, which is a decent signal the author cares about performance and long-term maintenance.

Roadmap admits it's at 'term some things' stage — expect crashes and unsupported apps, this is beta software not something to build a workflow around. No mention of test coverage or CI in the repo tree, which is concerning for something touching low-level protocol parsing, mmap, and file descriptor passing in Go/C. Performance is inherently limited by terminal resolution and rendering, so it's a novelty for most GUI apps rather than a practical remote-desktop replacement. Linux-only despite the flashy iTerm2/kitty examples — the compositor itself doesn't run on macOS, so cross-platform users still need a Linux box or VM.
