nezvers/Godot-GameTemplate
Template for top-down shooter, with solutions for tough problems.
A Godot 4 template for top-down shooters. The game lives in addons/top_down and the reusable scripts in addons/great_games_library, so you can lift pieces out without the game around them. It is aimed at developers who already know Godot and want a reference for menus, pausing, loading and audio. It is not a starter for beginners.
- Drawing the boundary between game code (addons/top_down) and reusable code (addons/great_games_library) is the right call, and the README states it. It also keeps upstream changes contained in one folder when you merge them.
- boot_load.tscn precompiles shaders, CanvasMaterials and ParticleProcessMaterials and preloads scenes behind threaded loading. Most templates skip this, and it is the part most likely to prevent first-run hitches in a shooter.
- The resource-based building blocks (SoundResource, InstanceResource with pooling, ReferenceNodeResource, SaveableResource) move configuration into the inspector instead of hardcoding it. The AreaTransmitter layer is meant to carry damage, pickups and obstacle hits so the sender doesn't need to know what it hit.
- Menu, fullscreen, audio buses, input rebinding and pause are all present. That is the plumbing most people end up writing twice, so having it already wired is a real time saving.
- The bundled Kanban Tasks plugin has nothing to do with a game template. It is extra weight you have to remove or ignore, and it sits beside the code you will actually use.
- The audio bus layout has to stay at its default path and name because of a Godot issue with custom locations. The README warns about this once, but it is easy to break by reorganising the project and then spend time finding out why audio stopped routing.
- The README is a feature list plus a scene tour. It doesn't explain how the library pieces fit together, what the threading guarantees are, or how to add a second level beyond room_0.tscn. The linked video is the only real walkthrough.
- The author says this is their personal template and will drift toward their own game, so breaking changes are likely. Pin a commit if you build on it. The assets have a custom licence (free to modify and use commercially, but not to sell as your own creation), so check that before shipping.
