// the take

A HACS-distributed custom integration that brings TP-Link Tapo smart plugs, bulbs, power strips, and the H100 hub ecosystem (sensors, siren, switches) into Home Assistant via the plugp100 library. It's for Home Assistant users with Tapo hardware who want native entities and energy monitoring instead of the stock Tapo app.

Device coverage is wide and current: P100-series plugs, P300/P304M power strips with per-socket energy monitoring, L5xx/L6xx/L9xx bulbs and strips, plus the H100 hub with its T31x/T100/T110/S200B/S200D/KE100 children. It implements the newer KLAP protocol TP-Link pushed out, not just the legacy one. Config flow UI setup replaced the old YAML config, matching current HA integration architecture guidelines rather than lagging behind them. There's a real test suite (per-platform unit tests for switch, light, sensor, siren, binary_sensor, and the hub child coordinators) plus CI running hassfest validation, lint, and tests on every PR.

It's billed as a local/LAN integration but devices still need internet access to sync credentials with Tapo's cloud, so a network outage or TP-Link cloud hiccup can break your lights at home even though nothing left your LAN. There's a known, long-standing auth bug where an account email with capital letters fails login - documented as a workaround in the README rather than fixed, which is a bad sign for how deep the issue goes in their auth handling. It's a single-maintainer project funded by BuyMeCoffee/GitHub sponsors, so bus-factor risk is real and some features sit permanently in partial-support limbo (L920/L930 addressable effects, H200 hub still WIP). Recent versions dropped YAML configuration and changed MAC-tracking behavior, so upgrading across versions can silently change how your existing config works.
