This is the repo for Vue 2. For Vue 3, go to https://github.com/vuejs/core

This is Vue 2 — the version before the current Vue 3 (vuejs/core). It officially reached end-of-life on December 31, 2023, and the repo has had no commits since October 2024, which was just a final doc/maintenance pass, not active development. Relevant only to teams still running legacy Vue 2 apps, not to anyone starting something new.

The reactivity core (Object.defineProperty getters/setters driving a dependency graph) is still one of the more readable implementations of that pattern if you want to understand how it works, even though Vue 3 replaced it with Proxies. The 2.x ecosystem — vue-router 3, Vuex, vue-cli — is mature, fully documented, and still functions, so existing apps aren't stranded without tooling. ES5 compatibility (down to IE8) is broader than Vue 3 offers, which occasionally matters for old enterprise targets.

It's dead: no security patches, no bug fixes, nothing — the README points you to a paid third-party vendor (HeroDevs) if you need CVEs patched. The Composition API only exists via the 2.7 backport, and most new libraries in the ecosystem (Pinia, current VueUse) target Vue 3 only, so you're increasingly locked out of anything new. There's no incremental upgrade path to 3.x — the reactivity internals and several lifecycle hooks changed enough that migration is a real rewrite, not a dependency bump.
