Awesome list of open-source startup alternatives to well-known SaaS products 🚀
A big categorized table mapping open-source projects to the closed-source SaaS products they compete with — auth, CMS, BI, e-commerce, and dozens more categories. It's useful as a jumping-off point when you're evaluating build-vs-buy or looking for an open-source swap-in for a tool you already know, maintained by Runa Capital (a VC, so take the 'startup' framing with that in mind).
The project isn't just a hand-edited README — there's an actual pipeline (build_readme.py, build_website.py, GitHub Actions workflows) that generates the table from individual YAML submission files, which keeps PRs reviewable instead of one giant markdown diff. It also ships a Docusaurus site under website/ with per-project doc pages, so the content is browsable outside the GitHub README. Categories are specific enough to be useful (Auth & SSO, Feature flag management, Graph database) rather than generic buckets, and it's actively maintained — pushes as recent as September 2025.
It's a list, not an evaluation: entries get one line of description and a star count badge, with zero signal on whether the project is actually production-ready, how its community health looks, or how it compares to the other 3-5 alternatives in the same row. The inclusion bar ('100+ stars', 'founded in last 10 years') is loose enough that dead or barely-maintained projects can sit next to genuinely strong ones with no way to tell them apart from the table alone. Triple source of truth (submissions/*.yaml, generated README, website/docs/*.md) means there's real risk of drift if the build scripts aren't run consistently. And because it's VC-maintained, there's an inherent selection bias toward companies that look like fundable startups rather than the best technical choice in a category.
