Firebase Admin Node.js SDK
The official server-side SDK for Firebase — Auth, Firestore, Realtime Database, Cloud Messaging, Remote Config, and a dozen other Firebase/GCP services behind one package. This is for backend devs already committed to Firebase who need to verify ID tokens, manage users, or push notifications from a trusted server environment.
Modular per-service imports (firebase-admin/auth, firebase-admin/firestore, etc.) so you're not forced to pull in the whole SDK just to verify a token. API surface is tracked with api-extractor and checked into etc/*.api.md, so breaking changes get caught in review rather than discovered by users. Test coverage is split cleanly into unit and integration suites per service, and there's a real integration test run against live Firebase projects in CI, not just mocks. Actively maintained by Google with a nightly build and a proper release pipeline.
The README tells you almost nothing — no code example beyond initializeApp(), everything else is punted to an external docs site, so you can't evaluate the API from the repo alone. Requires Node 22+, which is an aggressive floor and will bite anyone on an LTS runtime one step behind. It's a thick abstraction over Google's REST APIs — when something breaks you're debugging through several layers of internal request handlers (auth-api-request.ts, messaging-api-request-internal.ts) rather than a thin HTTP wrapper. Locks you into Firebase/GCP credentials and service account setup, which is friction for local dev and makes it a bad fit if you're multi-cloud or ever plan to leave Firebase.
