Firebase Javascript SDK
The official JavaScript/TypeScript SDK for Firebase, covering Auth, Firestore, Realtime Database, Storage, Functions, Messaging, and more as a set of modular npm packages. It's for web (and some Node/React Native) developers building on Firebase as their backend rather than rolling their own API/auth/DB layer.
The v9 API redesign is genuinely a redesign, not a rebrand — it's function-based and tree-shakeable, so a Firestore-only app doesn't ship Auth or Storage code. Each service lives in its own package under packages/ with independent versioning via changesets, so you can reason about what you're actually depending on. CI is extensive (test-all, per-service test-changed workflows, coverage tracking), which matters given how much surface area a multi-service SDK like this has to keep working simultaneously.
The dev/test setup is stuck in an older era of the JS ecosystem — pinned to Yarn 1.x (not Yarn Berry), requires a Java 11+ install just for the closure compiler, and integration tests need a real, manually-configured Firebase project (Firestore, Realtime DB, Storage bucket with CORS, anonymous auth) rather than emulators-only. There's no way to meaningfully evaluate or test this SDK without already being bought into the Firebase/GCP ecosystem, which is fine for existing Firebase users but means the repo itself isn't useful as a reference for e.g. building your own client SDK. Tree-shaking helps, but pulling in more than one or two services still adds meaningful bundle weight compared to hand-rolled REST calls.
