// the take

Slick is a jQuery-based carousel/slider plugin that's been the default answer to "I need a carousel" for over a decade. It's for teams already running jQuery who want drag/swipe, responsive breakpoints, and autoplay without writing their own slider logic.

The responsive option is genuinely well designed — you can set different slidesToShow/slidesToScroll per breakpoint or fully disable the slider below a threshold with "unslick", which most carousel libraries still don't do cleanly. It covers the long tail of real requirements (grid mode via rows/slidesPerRow, RTL, vertical swiping, lazy loading with both ondemand and progressive modes, asNavFor for syncing multiple sliders) instead of just the happy path. The events/methods API (slickGoTo, slickAdd, slickFilter, etc.) gives you real runtime control rather than just init-time config.

Hard dependency on jQuery is the dealbreaker for most new projects — you're pulling in a whole library just for a carousel, and it doesn't play well with React/Vue/Svelte component lifecycles without wrapper hacks. Browser support claims IE8+, which tells you the implementation predates modern CSS (flexbox/scroll-snap) and intersection observer-based approaches that newer carousels (Swiper, embla) use for better performance and touch handling. No TypeScript types in the repo itself, so you're reaching for @types/slick-carousel or writing your own. It's effectively feature-frozen — version 2.0's main change is "works with jQuery 4" rather than any architectural modernization, so don't expect CSS scroll-snap or framework-native bindings to show up.
