Gray box end-to-end testing and automation framework for mobile apps
Detox is a gray-box E2E testing framework for React Native apps on iOS and Android, built and used in production by Wix. It's for teams who've outgrown manual QA and want UI tests that run against a real simulator/device instead of mocked components or Appium-style black-box automation.
The core idea is legit: instead of sleeps or polling, it hooks into the app's async operations (network requests, timers, animations, the RN bridge) via native idling resources on both platforms, so tests wait for the app to actually be idle before asserting. That's a real mechanism for cutting flakiness, not just marketing. It's also test-runner agnostic with Jest wired in by default, and the CI setup runs matrix builds across multiple RN versions (0.77 through 0.85) on both platforms via Buildkite, which is more rigorous than most testing tools bother with.
Device testing on iOS isn't supported yet, only simulators, which the README states outright and quietly undercuts the 'runs on devices' pitch. It's React Native only, so it's dead weight for native iOS/Android or Flutter shops. Official RN compatibility is a narrow window (0.77-0.84), meaning a routine RN upgrade can knock your test suite out of official support. The separate Fabric-specific idling resource classes alongside the old-architecture ones suggest the synchronization layer needed real surgery for the New Architecture migration, which is the kind of internal complexity that tends to leak into edge-case flakiness during platform transitions.
