Terraform provider for Azure Resource Manager
The official Terraform provider for Azure Resource Manager, maintained by HashiCorp. It's the thing you reach for the moment you type `resource "azurerm_` — anyone provisioning Azure infrastructure with Terraform is using this whether they think about it or not.
Near-total coverage of the Azure resource surface, with new services landing fast via automated PRs that sync against the Azure Go SDK and Pandora rather than manual tracking. The contributor docs (schema design, breaking-change rules, acceptance testing) are unusually detailed for a project this size, which keeps quality consistent across hundreds of contributors. CI is heavy — TeamCity plus a long GitHub Actions pipeline running provider-level acceptance tests against real Azure, not just unit tests against mocks.
Size is the tax you pay: state files get large fast, and plan/apply times are dominated by Azure API latency rather than anything the provider controls. Major version bumps (currently v5.0) carry real breaking changes, and because the surface area is so large, upgrading across majors on a nontrivial codebase means auditing dozens of resource blocks, not a quick diff. Parts of the schema are effectively generated pass-throughs from the Azure SDK, so field-level validation and docs quality varies noticeably between well-trodden resources (VMs, networking) and less-used ones. Support is GitHub issues only — no SLA — and a backlog this size means niche resource bugs can sit for a while.
