Terraform Provider for VMware vSphere
The official Terraform provider for VMware vSphere, now maintained under Broadcom after the VMware acquisition. It's for infrastructure teams running on-prem vSphere who want to provision VMs, networking, storage policies, and cluster config as code instead of clicking through vCenter.
Resource coverage is genuinely wide — compute clusters, DRS/HA overrides, distributed virtual switches, content library, storage policies, SSO roles/users, supervisor namespaces — this isn't a thin wrapper around a handful of API calls. Nearly every resource and data source has a matching _test.go file, so there's real acceptance test coverage rather than just unit tests on helpers. CI is actually enforced: golangci-lint, a dedicated docs-check workflow, goreleaser for releases, and stale/lock bots keeping issue noise down.
It's built on the classic resource_vsphere_*.go / terraform-plugin-sdk/v2 pattern, not the newer terraform-plugin-framework — fine today, but means it'll eventually need a migration that providers this large tend to put off for years. The README is pure corporate boilerplate (license headers, support-ticket instructions, a link to the registry) with zero actual HCL examples, so you learn nothing about using the provider without leaving the repo. This only matters if you're already paying for vSphere licensing — there's no way to try it against a free/open hypervisor, which caps the audience to people already inside VMware's ecosystem. The 488 forks on 672 stars is a strong signal that most usage is internal patch-and-fork rather than upstream contribution, which tracks with how slow enterprise-vendor PRs tend to move.
